Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that California residents will now have the option to securely add their driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet on their iPhone or Apple Watch. This new feature will allow Californians to use their digital ID at select businesses and TSA security checkpoints, including at San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.
“Californians can now add their driver’s license or state ID to their iPhone or Apple Watch in Apple Wallet,” said Governor Newsom. “This integration helps us better serve the people of California in the 21st century.”
The announcement is part of California’s mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program, which is currently limited to 1.5 million participants. Just last month, Newsom announced that Californians could also add their mobile driver’s licenses to Google Wallet.
“Giving California residents the ability to easily add and present their IDs on their iPhone or Apple Watch is a big step toward replacing the physical wallet with a more secure and private digital wallet,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “This launch marks a key milestone in expanding IDs in Apple Wallet. Not only is California one of the largest states in the U.S., but it’s also home for us, and we’re thrilled to provide an easy and transparent way to present IDs here.”
