Biden administration is preparing to restrict US cloud-computing services access to Chinese companies

Per Reuters

The Biden administration is planning to restrict access to US cloud-computing services for Chinese companies. This likely includes access to providers like Amazon and Microsoft's cloud services.

This was according to people familiar with the situation, who noted that should the rule be enforced, it would reportedly require Chinese companies first to seek government approval for the use of the technology.

It was noted that the expectation for the new measures is that they would be implemented in the coming weeks. This would be an expansion of an October policy regarding semiconductor export control.

The news comes after China announced that it would be controlling exports of certain semiconductor-related metals. The country said that this decision was to help it protect national security and interests.

The decision meant that exporters first needed permission from China to ship the metals, specifically products from gallium and germanium.

In January, it was reported that Dell planned to phase out its "made in China" chips in 2024. This comes as most companies rely on China for their manufacturing.

In other news, a former Samsung exec allegedly tried to copy an entire semiconductor plant in China after stealing blueprints and designs. The executive was 65 years old, and the supposedly copied semiconductor plant was to be constructed in Xi'an.
