Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against Twitter for Allegedly Targeting Female Employees in Layoffs

Per Reuters

After Elon Musk's $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, one of the major news about the social platform was layoffs after layoffs. Now, Twitter got hit by a class action lawsuit for targeting female employees.

The proposed lawsuit says the layoffs included 57% of total females and only 47% of total men, but the new lawsuit brings the number up to 63% of women and 48% of men.

The lawsuit was filed by two women who were laid off in November and accused the company of sex discrimination. The lawsuit alleges that Twitter broke federal and California laws.

One of the plaintiffs' lawyers, Shannon Liss-Riordan, said that Musk had intentionally targeted women without regard for their contributions and talent. She said women were targeted when the new Twitter CEO bought the company.

To add to the case, Twitter was alleged to let go of employees and contractors without legally required advance notice and did not pay the promised severance.

In early November, Twitter laid off about 3,700 employees, with hundreds more resigning after Musk's previous call to "hardcore" work. The new Twitter CEO gave employees an ultimatum to commit to long work hours at high intensity, per WP.

Musk: "This will mean working long hours at high intensity."

The new Twitter CEO's intense hours were alleged as discrimination to disabled workers.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed also criticized Musk for turning certain offices into bedrooms at the company's headquarters. The matter is being investigated for potential building code violation by the city's Department of Building Inspections, per BBC.

The Department of Building Inspection went on KQED, a public-radio station, regarding their investigation.

Department of Building Inspection: 'We need to make sure the building is being used as intended."

Twitter is also facing complaints from three other workers with the US National Labor Retaliations Board. These complaints claim that what happened to them was retaliation for trying to fight for better conditions at work.

So far, Twitter has denied wrongdoing and has not responded to complaints.
