Disney 'Avatar: The Way of Water' is Close to Beating 1997's Titanic Numbers at #4

Per Box Office Mojo

After the first Avatar movie was able to top the charts as the world's highest-grossing film, the second movie, "Avatar: The Way of Water" is now closing in as it just surpassed "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" as the 4th highest grossing title.

After new numbers were reported on Jan 30, "Avatar: The Way of Water" raked in $2.11 billion, which beat another Disney movie, "Star Wars: Episode VII," at just $2.07 billion. Now, the film is closing in on "Titanic," the classic Leonardo DiCaprio film of 1997, which sits close at just $2.19 billion.

The film has already made history as the highest-grossing film of 2022, as Disney stock dropped by 40.04% throughout the year. During that time, "Avatar: The Way of Water" achieved a whopping $1.51 billion in lifetime gross shortly during the beginning of the year.

Just about a week earlier, the movie beat the $2 billion barrier as it had just recently surpassed "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which sat at $1.9 billion. The film has also surpassed "Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" and "Avengers: Infinity War," which sit at $2.07 billion and $2.05 billion, respectively.

The latest Avatar film is also getting closer to the highest-grossing Marvel film and the second-highest-grossing film of all time, "Avengers: Endgame," at $2.79 billion. So far, the highest-grossing film of all time is still the first Avatar, which sits close to $3 billion at $2.92 billion.

The movie was reportedly a high-stake decision for Disney as the movie took an estimated $350 million to make, per Forbes. Director James Cameron indicated that to break even, the movie needed to rake in $2 billion, and so far, the film has already passed its estimated break-even point.
