President Trump on Thursday suggested cutting off government contracts with Elon Musk’s companies, as their once-warm relationship continues to unravel in a very public fashion.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Musk had been “wearing thin” and claimed he asked the tech billionaire to exit his administration. Trump also cited the removal of electric vehicle incentives as a trigger for Musk’s outrage.
“I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!” Trump wrote, referring to the elimination of an electric vehicle tax credit that was part of a sweeping legislative package.
In a follow-up post, Trump went further—threatening to pull federal contracts tied to Musk’s companies, which span several industries and are worth billions.
“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!” Trump added.
SpaceX, Musk’s aerospace firm, holds multibillion-dollar deals with the federal government, particularly through NASA and the Pentagon. Other ventures, like the Starlink satellite network, also maintain government partnerships.
Trump’s threat could deal a serious blow to Musk’s business empire and signals that the rift between the former allies may be deepening further.
