Per Tiffany Fong
FTX's downfall has been unveiling a string of curious events leading to its downfall. In an interview with Tiffany Fong, Sam Bankman Fried revealed his donation was not just to the Democratic party but also the Republicans.
SBF: "I donated to both parties. I donated about the same amount to both parties this year."
The FTX founder then revealed that all his donations were "dark." He then explained that the reason behind this was not regulatory but that reporters "freak the f*** out" when they know someone donates to a Republican when they are "super liberal." Due to this, he decided to make all his Republican donations dark.
Dark money reportedly means spending meant to influence political outcomes from undisclosed sources.
In 2020, SBF was known as one of the largest Democratic campaign donors, with $5,220,000 from FTX US and $6,242,800 from Alameda Research given in support to now-President Joe Biden, per Decrypt.
OpenSecrets.org estimates that SBF has donated $39.8 million in contributions through the 2021-2022 cycle. FTX co-CEO Ryan Salame, on the other hand, donated $23.6 million to the Republican campaigns.
Per the site, SBF only donated $240,200 to the Republicans. So far, there is no way of publicly verifying his donations to the Republican party.
After word came out of SBF's donation to the democrats, people on Twitter (including threads of Elon Musk) have pointed out how the media focused more of their attention on investigating Musk's acquisition of Twitter than SBF's FTX case, resulting in over billions of lost customer funds.
Elon Musk tweeted a meme of senators calling the FTX to investigate Twitter instead of focusing on how FTX lost over billions of dollars of client funds. Musk also revealed how SBF was a lead investor of Semafor.
This publication alleged that SBF's had a $100 million stake in the now-private platform before the piece was corrected, with Musk providing clarifications saying SBF does not own any shares in the new Twitter 2.0. Semafor's editor-in-chief said like Musk, they "took an investment from him."
Elon Musk said, "Neither I nor Twitter have taken any investment from SBF/FTX. Your article is a lie."
The article has since been corrected
