Lululemon, $LULU, CEO who fired employees for confronting thieves stands by decision, per NYP: ‘It’s only merchandise’

Lululemon employees face the risk of losing their jobs if they attempt to intervene and stop a thief from stealing merchandise while they are on duty. Calvin McDonald, the CEO of Lululemon, stated in an interview with CNBC that the company has a strict policy regarding how retail employees should handle incidents of shoplifting.

McDonald emphasized that Lululemon prioritizes the safety of its team members and customers above all else. Therefore, employees are trained to step back and allow the theft to take place. The company utilizes various technologies, such as cameras, to address theft issues and collaborates with law enforcement in handling such situations.

The CEO stressed the importance of adhering to this policy by highlighting instances in which employees from Lululemon and other retailers have been harmed or even killed when attempting to confront thieves. The purpose of the policy is to protect employees, and Lululemon stands firmly behind it.

The company's commitment to enforcing the policy is evident in recent incidents. In Peachtree Corners, Georgia, two former Lululemon employees were fired after reporting a robbery to the police. One of the employees recorded the incident. Subsequently, the police apprehended the three robbers, who were charged with theft-related crimes. Lululemon terminated the employees involved, emphasizing that they knowingly violated the policy by engaging with the thieves and pursuing them outside the store.

It should be noted that Lululemon employees are allowed and encouraged to call 911 when necessary, and such calls were not the cause of termination in the aforementioned case, as clarified by the company in a statement.

Theft poses a significant challenge for retailers, resulting in substantial inventory losses due to shoplifting and fraud. In 2021, shrinkage accounted for $95 billion in losses for US retailers, up from $91 billion in 2020, according to the National Retail Federation. To ensure employee safety, many retailers, including Lululemon, prohibit staff from confronting thieves directly. Instead, they rely on advanced surveillance systems, license plate recognition systems, and RFID systems to mitigate losses, as highlighted in the National Retail Federation's 2022 Retail Security Survey.
