Roughly 47 million workers quit during the 'great resignation' in 2022, 80% of them said they regretted it

Per CNBC

2022 was reportedly a record year for quitting, with 47 million quitting throughout the year. A survey by Paychex found that 80% of them regretted their decision to quit their jobs.

Those that quit cited different sectors that suffered from the result.

  • Mental health
  • Work-life balance
  • Workplace relationships
  • Chances of getting rehired

The study by Paychex found that 89% of Gen Z workers regretted quitting and, as a result, saw a decline in their mental health. Paychex HR solutions vice president of enterprise, Jeff Williams, gave a statement on how the "great resignation" affected certain employees.

Williams: “The ‘great resignation’ has led to much regret by employees seeking new opportunities. Among those regrets, employees were most likely to miss their co-workers,”

The research also revealed how 9 in 10 people decided to change industries after they had resigned. It was noted that 25% of those that stayed in the same industry reportedly regretted their decision.

Returning employees reportedly got a 7% raise, but not all of the employers wanted to give new benefits to former employees. 38% of them said they were unwilling to offer additional benefits.

Blue-collar employees were reportedly 17% more likely compared to white-collar employees.

Williams: “Anecdotally, we believe that more employers than ever are open-minded to the idea of “boomerang” employees returning to companies."

The burnout rate for desk job workers is now reportedly higher compared to pandemic peak numbers. The global burnout rate reportedly sat at 42% at the end of 2022, with 41% of people in the US saying they experienced it.

LinkedIn data recently showed how four out of five Gen Z workers wanted to move jobs in 2023. This was because most of them, 80% of people included in the study age 18 to 24 years old, found their jobs "unfulfilling."
