The Pentagon is expected to announce as early as Sunday an initial emergency military assistance package for Israel amid the war in Gaza, per Axios.
In a Sunday call, President Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that extra military support is currently en route to Israel, with further assistance anticipated in the days ahead, as reported by the White House.
The significance: Israel is gearing up for a comprehensive offensive against Hamas, which initiated an unprecedented incursion into Israeli territory on Saturday. This Israeli operation could potentially result in a ground campaign in Gaza, likely spanning several weeks and carrying the risk of escalating tensions in other parts of the region.
The fact that Israel requested aid on the war's first day underscores the anticipated need for substantial firepower as the conflict progresses. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated in a release that the U.S. "will swiftly supply the Israel Defense Forces with additional equipment and resources, including munitions."
He further mentioned, "The initial security assistance will commence its movement today and is expected to arrive in the coming days."
