On Friday, President Trump suggested that convicted anti-Tesla protesters could be sent to a notorious prison in El Salvador.
Trump has strongly backed and promoted Elon Musk’s car company, which has been struggling with declining sales and a slumping stock price.
After previously vowing to classify property crimes targeting Tesla as domestic terrorism, the Justice Department charged three individuals on Thursday with using Molotov cocktails to set fire to Tesla vehicles and showrooms. Officials linked the attacks to the #TeslaTakedown movement, which has emerged as a response to Musk’s involvement in DOGE.
Those charged face prison sentences ranging from five to twenty years if convicted, according to the DOJ.
“I look forward to watching the sick terrorist thugs get 20-year jail sentences for what they are doing to Elon Musk and Tesla," Trump posted on Truth Social Friday morning. "Perhaps they could serve them in the prisons of El Salvador, which have become so recently famous for such lovely conditions!"
The U.S. recently reached an agreement with El Salvador’s government to deport certain migrants to the country, where many are being held at the controversial CECOT anti-terrorism prison. Human Rights Watch has accused the facility of widespread abuses, including inadequate access to food and medical care.
