UK’s King Charles to reportedly make ‘secret offer’ to Donald Trump during State visit

President Donald Trump made a surprising remark about the idea of the United States joining the British Commonwealth, nearly 250 years after declaring independence from Great Britain in 1776.

On Friday, March 21, Trump posted a link on Truth Social to an article from The Sun, which claimed that King Charles was preparing a "secret offer" for Trump’s upcoming state visit to the U.K.

According to the report, the British monarch would propose making the U.S. an "associate member" of the Commonwealth, a voluntary organization of 56 nations, most of which were formerly under British rule, with King Charles serving as its ceremonial head.

"This is being discussed at the highest levels," a source told The Daily Mail. "It would be a wonderful move that would symbolize Britain's close relationship with the U.S. … Donald Trump loves Britain and has great respect for the royal family, so we believe he would see the benefits of this."

It was also suggested that adding the U.S. to the Commonwealth could help smooth tensions between Trump and Canada, another member of the organization.

Trump shared the article with an enthusiastic response, writing on Truth Social, "I Love King Charles. Sounds good to me!"

Buckingham Palace has not commented on the report. PEOPLE has reached out to both the palace and the White House for confirmation.

While King Charles is the Commonwealth’s symbolic leader, membership decisions are handled by the Commonwealth Secretariat, which outlines the process and eligibility criteria on its official website.
