US Navy says Chinese state-sponsored hackers infiltrated their infrastructure

Per CNBC

The US Navy has officially stated that a hack from state-sponsored Chinese hackers hit it. This came after Microsoft recently issued a warning, which disclosed the attack.

Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro spoke with Morgan Brennan of CNBC, sharing details of what had happened. Del Toro gave a statement sharing how the US Navy was indeed impacted.

Del Toro: "(It's) no surprise that China has been behaving in this manner, not just for the last couple years, but for decades.”

The Secretary of Navy declined to give further information regarding the details of the hack. More details can be seen in Microsoft's recent warning,s which reveals that the exploit came from Volt Typhoon, a codename used by the hackers.

The company said that specifically, the Chinese hackers wanted to infiltrate a key US military base in Guam. The hackers reportedly targeted the communications and maritime sectors.

Microsoft clarified that the group usually focuses more on surveillance instead of disruption. In a statement to The New York Times, however, top intelligence officials and researchers said they were still concerned regarding the Guam hack.

Per the report, it was noted that the island territory was important when "fending off a long-feared invasion of Taiwan by China."

Microsoft also said that they had "moderate confidence" that Volt Typhoon was developing capabilities that could potentially disrupt important communication infrastructure between the US and the Asian region in future crises.

The company, along with Western intelligence agencies, revealed that the group was engaging in espionage activities targeting different US organizations, including telecommunications and transportation hubs.

It was also previously revealed that last year, North Korea-linked hackers were responsible for the theft of $3.8 billion in crypto for the year, with $775.7 billion being stolen in October alone from 32 different attacks.
