Zelensky says it’s not the right time for elections in Ukraine, per AP.
In his video address on Monday, Zelensky made the case that while Ukraine is battling Russia's invasion initiated in February 2022, the country should not be preoccupied with holding elections. He had previously left the possibility of Ukraine holding a presidential election next year open, although elections are currently on hold in the nation due to martial law.
Zelensky emphasized, "The time for politically divisive matters should come to a halt." He stressed that the present moment is focused on defense and the battle that will determine the fate of the nation and its people, rather than engaging in political maneuvers, which he asserted is what Russia is expecting from Ukraine. "I believe that now is not the appropriate time for elections."
Zelensky also highlighted the need to put an end to political disputes and promote unity, emphasizing that there are governmental structures in place capable of achieving this and providing the necessary answers to society. This approach is aimed at preventing conflicts and thwarting any external interference in Ukraine.
Presidential elections in Ukraine are normally held every five years, with the next one scheduled for March of the following year. Zelensky took office in May 2019, which means that his five-year term is due to conclude in a few months.
Regarding his potential reelection, Zelensky's wife, Olena Zelenska, mentioned in September that she was uncertain about his decision. She also indicated that the country's capacity to organize a free and fair election could influence whether he decides to seek a second term. She said, "It will also depend on whether our society still wants him to be president, and if he senses that Ukrainian society no longer wishes for him to be president, he will probably not run. I will support him in whatever decision he makes."
