Microsoft to add ChatGPT access to Azure Government cloud service

Per Bloomberg

Microsoft has expanded the availability of ChatGPT in its ecosystem once again, and with the most recent update, it now integrates AI models to its Azure Government cloud computing services. This would make the artificial intelligence tool more accessible to the government.

This comes after the company tapped ChatGPT to power the company's Bing chatbot. It announced that Azure Government could also use two large language models.

These LLM models still come from OpenAI and are used to power its GPT-4 and GPT-3 technologies through Azure. So far, no specific government agencies were named regarding which ones would use the technology.

The Azure Government service has many federal government customers, including the following.

  • Defense Department
  • Energy Department
  • NASA

The Defense Technical Information Center confirmed that it would experiment with OpenAI models once the feature becomes available.

Microsoft reportedly hosts OpenAI models in its commercial cloud computing services, which were separate from Azure Government services. The latter reportedly has stricter rules and is more concerned regarding security and data compliance.

A professor from the University of Oxford noted that the probability of extinction by AI was "close to zero." This comes as a letter signed by multiple high-level people in the AI space saying that the tool posed a risk to humanity.

The professor, Sandra Wachter, said there were other more important matters regarding AI, including its environmental impact and how the technology would potentially replace many jobs.

It was noted that the statement suggesting how AI could cause human extinction was actually just a "publicity stunt."

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink recently noted that he thinks AI would be able to boost productivity by 30%. This comes as his company has a team called AI Labs that has long focused on AI and AI-related technology.

Fink noted that the company was already spending a lot of time to learn more about the technology.
