Kamala Harris’s economic proposals were significantly more popular than Donald Trump’s in a blind test comparing their plans.

A new Harris Poll, conducted exclusively for the Guardian, revealed that four out of the top five most favored proposals came from the Democratic candidate's campaign. The poll also highlighted strong optimism from Democrats about Harris's presidential bid, though there remained widespread pessimism about the state of the U.S. economy across both parties.

In the poll, participants were presented with 12 policy proposals—six from Harris's campaign and six from Trump’s—without being told which candidate they came from. The most popular proposal overall was a federal ban on price-gouging for food and groceries, a Democratic initiative that has drawn some criticism from prominent economists. Nearly half (44%) of respondents agreed that this proposal would strengthen the economy.

Harris’s price-gouging plan directly addresses the leading economic concern of those surveyed: the cost of living. A majority (66%) of respondents identified cost of living as one of their top economic worries.
