700 of 770 OpenAI employees saying they will leave the company now unless changes met, per Bloomberg.
OpenAI is currently experiencing widespread dissent, with over 730 employees signing an open letter threatening to resign unless the board steps down and reinstates Sam Altman as CEO, along with cofounder and former president Greg Brockman. Altman's controversial dismissal by the board on Friday triggered this revolt.
The open letter, signed by a significant majority of the company's employees, including Ilya Sutskever, the chief scientist and board member accused of orchestrating Altman's removal, criticizes the board's handling of the situation. The letter contends that the termination process and the removal of Brockman have jeopardized the company's work, undermined its mission, and revealed the board's incompetence in overseeing OpenAI.
In a surprising turn, Sutskever, who was implicated in the boardroom coup, expressed regret for his involvement on X just before the letter's release. By Monday evening, around 95 percent of OpenAI's employees had signed the letter, emphasizing the overwhelming unity among the workforce.
The weekend preceding the letter's release witnessed a tumultuous series of events in Silicon Valley. Altman was removed from his position on Friday by OpenAI's board, citing his alleged lack of consistency in communications as the reason. Mira Murati, the chief technology officer, was appointed as interim CEO.
In response to investor pushback, including from Microsoft, OpenAI's board initially indicated openness to Altman returning. Altman even visited the company's headquarters on Sunday, but later, the board informed the staff that Altman would not be reinstated.
Subsequently, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Altman and Brockman would lead a new advanced AI research unit at Microsoft, potentially providing resources for their success. Nadella left the door open for OpenAI employees interested in transitioning to Microsoft's subsidiary, stating the company's eagerness to support their endeavors swiftly.
